Recipient of Justice Janie L. Shores Scholarship Announced (09/23/2009)
The Alabama Law Foundation proudly announces that April Houston is the winner of the Justice Janie L. Shores Scholarship. The foundation and the Women’s Section of the Alabama State Bar established the scholarship in 2006 for female residents attending an Alabama law school. The Justice Janie L. Shores scholarship is named in honor of the first female Alabama Supreme Court Justice, who was elected in 1974. Mary Margaret Bailey, previous chair of the Women’s Section of the State Bar, explains, “We chose to honor Justice Shores because she has accomplished so many groundbreaking achievements in the legal field and has been such a great role model.”
April Houston graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2005. She currently attends the Thomas Goode Jones School of Law School in Montgomery and will graduate in May 2010. Houston has served on the Editorial Board of the Faulkner Law Review, was a Camille Armstrong Scholarship recipient for spring 2005, and was recognized as a University Scholar. Houston plans to go into some area of government law, such as criminal defense, where she can assist economically disadvantaged citizens.
